KeymasterWe have definitely seen an increase in cancellations this year. We only had one invited applicant who did not reply and select a date, but have had four or five cancel. Many years we have no cancellations and seldom more than one or two. We do not invite more than we have spots for and do not place applicants on a waitlist, so we will be interviewing fewer applicants this year.
That may be a good thing as it will eliminate some who were obviously not highly motivated to come to our program but may have been ranked highly.
We did lose two excellent applicants who did not receive military deferments.

KeymasterGood Morning,
My team and I were talking this morning about how we’ve had fewer cancellations this year than in years past. Although we have had cancellations, they’ve come later in the process. In previous years I’ve had candidates who immediately declined the interview invite and didn’t even move forward with scheduling.
This year, every single person accepted the invite, picked a date, and then a few candidates later on told me they couldn’t attend. I think this was due to the fact that we got our invites out earlier and thus students didn’t have any conflicts with dates yet.
Although cancellations can add extra work for coordinators I still go ahead and fill any spots with waitlisted applicants if possible. I’ve never gotten a cancellation less than a week out from interview day, so with a weeks’ notice I can make adjustments and invite someone else.
I agree that lesser competitive applicants are likely missing out on interviews as it is very easy to apply to 100+ programs. However, I do think that programs who extend more invites than spots available and programs who violate the NRMP Code of Conduct by communicating with students after interviews with information about where they may stand on a rank list only adds to this extremely stressful process for students.

KeymasterOur PD’s position is that no one is excused from Jury Duty. As Carmen mentioned, if there is a real conflict with the first date assigned, they can opt for a second date, with the understanding there is no getting out of the 2nd date. We have not yet run into any issues with residents being assigned to long-term jury duty.

KeymasterIn Miami, doctors are no longer excused. Now, if you cannot make the date assigned to you, they ask you to choose a date when you can make it and then they automatically re-assign you to that date. They do not notify you again and you must show up on the date you selected.

KeymasterHi Cynthia –
We also help residents with an excuse letter. We just ask that they call to make sure the letter was received and confirm they have been excused.

KeymasterHi Cynthia
I help residents with an excuse letter as long as they provide me with their notice in a timely manner.ARCOS
KeymasterThanks everyone for your responses. It’s so interesting…it seems we all spend time on our personal phones trying to herd these cats! It must be all jobs nowadays that people have to deal with this.
Thanks!

KeymasterHi Donna,
If there is ever a gap, we do tours of the hospital with the residents. we also do a slide show about our program and things that have occurred over the year. It prompts conversation and the time flies by!

KeymasterHi Donna – I have a residency program, not fellowship, but we run our interviews in one 4-hour Saturday morning (in which we interview 75 people). Here is a sample of our agenda. We start the day with a 30 minute talk by the Chair of the Department about Mayo Clinic, we have a 1 hour program director talk which highlights the residency program, we have 4 15-minute interviews, and we have a 45 minute tour of our campus. In the down time we have residents from our program having casual conversations with the applicants answering any questions.

KeymasterGood Afternoon,
When I began my position, I informed my PD that I will not provide my personal phone number and he was ok with it initially. I also did not receive emails on my personal phone. Needless to say, after not being able to contact me, he asked administration to provide me with a phone.ARCOS
KeymasterI also used my personal cell and am not reimbursed.
Several services offer institutional / education rates – we just need to show that we are state employees to receive the plan.

KeymasterGood morning,
Our program (and this might just be our department specifically) pays for a “work phone.” I personally don’t use it, and just use my personal phone, as I don’t want to carry around two phones. If your school/hospital/program offers work phones for others, it doesn’t seem unreasonable for you to have one. Methodist does have a policy however, that they do not reimburse personal cell phones.

KeymasterGreat Question and one I have thought about myself. I use my personal cell phone all day for work. I am curious about the replies.
