Annie DetrickKeymasterAll 5 of my PGY5 residents are considered ‘chief’ residents. I don’t believe it affects their pay scale, but is more program-specific in that each of them has an assigned set of admin duties – grand rounds, wellness, journal club, to name a few. I think there are programs/specialties at our institution where chief is an official job title and may affect pay scale, but I am not familiar with how that works.

Annie DetrickKeymasterI would wait until after the Match to be aligned with Match rules. I used to send a post-match survey to gather this data. I didn’t find it spectacularly helpful – a lot of complaints that Chicago is cold in December. Who knew?

Annie DetrickKeymasterHi Sarah,
We have 2 programs that each have 2 fellows at 2 sites. They switch quarterly so that each site always has a fellow and the fellows have equal time at each site. Hope this helps.

Annie DetrickKeymasterHi Bonnie!
I have an established Adult Recon fellowship.
1. Our program is ACGME-accredited. It has been since I took over; I don’t know any different. I would think it’s a draw to our program, but I know many/the majority are not.
2. I belive Smith & Nephew provide grant funding. We apply for our Sports fellowship, but I’m not sure about Joints. I would have to confirm with the fellowship coordinator.
3. When I first took over we did not match well. I think in part because of program leadership and some trouble with match violations. In recent years, we’ve been matching better and better. Joints is popular at the moment.
Hope this helps a little. Happy to answer any more questions.

Annie DetrickKeymasterAt the University of Chicago we cover quite a few things:
– Loupes (2.5x standard) and lead (vest, skirt and thyroid shield) fittings are held for interns during orientation
– A course/meeting is funded at each PGY level (e.g. OTA, AO Basic, AAOS, Miller Review)
– Residents are given and education fund (formerly the ‘book’ fund) – $2,750 over the course of 5 years – to use on educational materials/fees (e.g. Step 3, Part I registration, etc). The amount provided each PGY year fluctuates based on what expenses are expected for the residents.
Happy to porvide more information if needed.

Annie DetrickKeymasterHi Angela,
I think the stats are something like 80-90% of programs are back to in-person interviews. The University of Chicago was in person, but, to my knowledge, not all of Chicago programs are.

Annie DetrickKeymasterI include links to everything in an email sent through Thalamus. Included in this is a link to an attestation in REDCap (Survey Monkey, Google form, etc all work) that they are asked to complete at least 24 hours before their interview. They attest to receiving all of the information, and – for virtual interviews – they agree to not record /release anything from the interview.
Hope this helps.
Annie
Annie DetrickKeymasterWe did. Everyone gets an email – invitation, waitlist, rejection. It definitely cuts down on the number of emails/inquiries. The only people who have contacted me were on the WL – expressing continued interest.
Annie
Annie DetrickKeymasterYes, it does. I always do it from the calendar tab so I’ve added that screenshot to your Word doc.
I don’t know what to tell you about the vacation thing. I don’t think there’s a way to automate it, but you can reach out to Thalamus support. I’ve always had to manually open it – and have experienced lag time with the system being overwhelmed. It’s a great system, but nothing is perfect.

Annie DetrickKeymasterHi Honor,
To ensure that the interview dates don’t become active you will want to make sure the event is ‘Closed’. There is a toggle switch for this in the event details if you’re in the calendar. You’ll need to manually go in and switch the toggle to off on Tuesday 11/19 at noon to open the scheduling.
I’m not sure about the survey part as we track that outside of Thalamus.

Annie DetrickKeymasterAt UChicago we do not have a cut off for Step 2 for audition rotations (or residency interviews for that matter). They have to have passed part I.

Annie DetrickKeymasterThe University of Chicago generally send PGY5s to Miller Review in May. A few have opted to attend the AAOS in Chicago if they have some other conflict (e.g. parental leave). The last day of clinical activity for the PGY5s is June 23rd. They are given the last week as time to study/move/etc. Interns start on June 24th each year, so they get the week back at the end.
Annie DetrickKeymasterThe University of Chicago is still deciding, but leaning towards virtual interviews. We don’t yet have an institutional mandate, but hospital capactiy guidelines lead us to believe they would not allow us to conduct in-person interviews like we normally would.
Annie DetrickKeymasterHi Angela,
We use MedHub for final tracking, but we’ve created a JotForm that is used for the approval process – Chief, Admin, PD, and EA (if applicable).
Once all of the approvals have been gathered on the form I have an excel doc, MedHub and calendar to add the final time away to. It’s alot of places to track, but it’s helped organize things.
