OHSU has a similar process to those listed here, and we feel the same. The block dates are set by our medical school, and they determine when our VSLO opens and when we can send offers to the students. Our VSLO catalog is usually posted in mid-February, applicants can begin submitting applications in mid-to-late March, and notifications are sent mid-April. I feel that is a bit late to send the offers, and I believe we definitely miss out on some students who have already accepted other offers by the time we send ours. Our visiting student blocks start at the end of June and run through November. We do still have visiting students rotating on Universal Offer Day. We do not offer interviews to all of our rotators and for those students rotating during Universal Offer Day, we let them know prior to their rotation that they will be notified of their interview offer status after their rotation ends (usually the week after UOD).

    Hi everyone,

Our faculty member, Dr. Duncan Ramsey, has asked that I post this survey request once more in hopes of obtaining additional responses. The information below is for a survey intended for Program Directors and Associate Program Directors. Since I wasn’t able to find a list of PD/APD contact information through CORD, I thought I would send this to all of you and ask if you would be willing to forward this to your PD/APD.  Our faculty member, Dr. Duncan Ramsey, and Lance Lamore, the medical student on the project, would very much appreciate it!

    Thank you!

Subject: Orthopedic Residency DEI Research Survey Invitation

    Dear Program Director,

I hope you’re doing well. My name is Lance Lamore, and I’m reaching out because I’m conducting an IRB approved research study about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in orthopedic surgery residency programs. The goal is to understand program directors’ perspectives on current attitudes, challenges, and effective practices related to DEI. Given your leadership role and experience, your insights would be extremely valuable. I’d greatly appreciate it if you could take a few minutes (about 5 minutes) to complete a short survey at the link below. Your responses will remain confidential unless you choose otherwise. There’s also an option at the end of the survey if you’re interested in participating in a brief follow-up interview.

Thanks so much for your time.

Yes, we’ve posted our interview dates for this year on our website, and I would be open to posting them on the ARCOS calendar. I think I would just need a reminder on how to do that. 🙂 Thanks for the suggestion!

    Hi Kierstin,

At OHSU, our GME office pays for Step 3. Our department pays for loupes for our interns, and we pay to send the PGY-2s to AO Basic. However, I do apply for a grant to cover at least a portion of the AO Basic course expenses. Thank you!

    Hi Angela,

We have been virtual since COVID, and all programs in our institution are still interviewing virtually this year per direction from our DIO. Our Program Director has been very happy with our virtual interview experience and plans to keep our interviews virtual going forward.

    Thank you!

    Robin Sasaoka (OHSU)

    Hello!

We do not have an acknowledgement letter. We used to email them the sample contract/other required information with the interview invitation and ask them to send us an email acknowledgement that they had reviewed the information. Now that we conduct only virtual interviews and the invitations are sent through Thalamus, we include that information in the invite and state that by scheduling their interview, they are acknowledging they have reviewed the policies. The wording we use is as follows:
“Prior to scheduling your interview, please review the information found under the “Appointment Agreement and Policies” tab on this link – https://www.ohsu.edu/school-of-medicine/graduate-medical-education/incoming-residents-and-fellows – as well as the attached OHSU Interview Recording Agreement. By scheduling your interview through Thalamus, you are acknowledging that you have reviewed and understand the agreements and policies.”

    Thank you,

    Robin Sasaoka

We send out rejection notices right after we send our interview invites. We’ve found that if everyone is notified of their status on the same day, it helps to cut down on email inquiries.

    Thank you,

We send our PGY2s to AO Trauma Basic and pay all expenses associated with the course – registration, flight, lodging, per diem, ground transportation. We also send our PGY5s to AAOS and pay all expenses. In addition, we pay for the AAOS Board Review Course for our PGY5s. It is a virtual course, so we just pay for registration for that course.

    Thank you,

    Robin

    Good morning,

Our numbers are down by almost 200 applications this year, so it seems like signaling is working!

I mentioned this issue to our Program Director last week, and he has emailed Maria directly to let her know that our program currently doesn’t have an available space for in-person proctoring due to COVID distancing restrictions. He also indicated that it is unrealistic to offer the remote proctoring only on one day, since we have residents on call who would not be able to test at that time. He requested at least a 3 day window for residents to take the OITE remotely. The majority of the residents would take the test Saturday, and our weekend on-call residents would take the test Monday so they could get some sleep on Sunday. That is the schedule we’ve used for in-person proctoring in previous years.

    Hi Renee,

I’ve attached a file which outlines our policy regarding educational expenses. In addition to what is covered in the policy, we purchase loupes for all of our residents during their intern year, and we pay for everyone to have access to Orthobullets and JBJS Clinical Curriculum. We also support two PGY-4 residents to attend the AOA Resident Leadership Forum each year and, beginning this year, we support two residents to attend the ORS Grantsmanship Course.

    Thanks very much,
