Hi Darlene,
Here at Montefiore employees have been banned from any international business related travel. However on Friday my Chairman decided we will not be going to AAOS this year. He think’s its too risky and unless something should change, unfortunately I won’t be at ARCOS this year. Our residents are very disappointed, but apparently many New York City hospitals aren’t letting their doctors travel to AAOS.

Courtney MatlachKeymasterHi Darcey-
All of our residents get 4 weeks vacation. The vacation schedule is made right before each academic year so everyone knows in advance when their time off is. For our PGY4’s we allow them to schedule 3 weeks vacation and the 4th week is used as floating days for interviews. We give them a few additional days if need be, but beyond that if they need more time they owe us days back.

Courtney MatlachKeymasterHi Melissa- I will be there! See you in San Diego!
Courtney MatlachKeymasterHi Donna-
The only thing I can think of is if you go on the SFM website and click the program directory tab you can see interview dates. You can export the search results to excel and then sort it by subspecialty and/or state. Of course, this only works if the program listed the dates in their directory listing.
I’m not sure which subspecialty you are looking for, but for Shoulder & Elbow the ASES has a fellowship tab on their website and lists the interview dates for all the shoulder programs.
Let us know once you hear back from SFM!

Courtney MatlachKeymasterHi Jen,
Another great discussion to start!
– The reception is paid through a separate alumni fund.
– We do not require dues payment to attend.
– I sit in the front of the room at a check in table where people must stop and get their name tag and I have a sign reminding people they can pay their dues with me. I have an iPad and credit card swiper available to take payment. I find if one person has their credit card out usually the next person to approach the table will get their card out and ask if they owe. I try not to be too aggressive, but sometimes I will ask “did you want to pay your dues today” and I’ve never been told no. (Just ask Dr. Raskin, I’ve gotten from him each year!)
-This past year we decided to start asking non-alumni faculty to pay dues.
-It’s tax deductible, but very rarely does anyone ask for a letter. Our dues are only $175 so I assume that’s why.Looking forward to hearing what everyone else does!
January 13, 2020 at 9:20 am in reply to: Logistics of interviewing 80-100 residency applicants #1834Courtney MatlachKeymasterWhat a great discussion to get going!
Traditionally we have always had 2 interview days and have interviewed 40 candidates each day for a total of 80 applicants interviewed. However, this year we had a lot of rotators and because we do not interview during the rotation, we wanted to increase the number interviewed since our rotators were taking up a lot of the spots. This year we changed to 3 days with 35 each day totaling 105 interviewed.
Our selection committee consists of the PD, Chair, 7 Faculty, and 3 Chief Residents. The committee is required to participate in every interview day. Every applicant gets to meet with everyone on the committee (including PD & Chair). I split the day into two sessions (AM and PM) so that way the candidates are only here for a few hours and do not have to sit around all day waiting to be interviewed. We have 4-5 interview rooms and the students spend 10 minutes in each room. It’s a lot to fit into just a few hours, but we make it work.Courtney MatlachKeymasterOur institution gives house staff officers 4 weeks vacation per year. It is our department policy that vacation days must be taken in week increments. You may take two weeks at a time, but no more then 2. Our Chief Residents only take two weeks vacation as they leave 2 weeks early in June to focus on studying for the boards.
Courtney MatlachKeymasterHi Christine-
Don’t know if you saw, but it looks like the annual reports are finally up!
CourtneyCourtney MatlachKeymasterI’ve been checking periodically for the report as well, but nothing seems to be out yet. I also haven’t seen any emails saying that there is a delay. I guess we just have to keep checking.
