Supplemental Applications

Hello everyone,

For those programs that request a supplemental application in addition to ERAS, when is the supplemental application typically due—at the same time as ERAS or at a later date? Also, do you send an email to applicants you are interested in interviewing to prompt them to complete the supplemental application?

Hi Kim!

We did not ask for supplementals this year, but we did for the past 5 years. We gave applicants the ERAS opening date as the due date. But we did not penalize applicants who submitted late. It usually was just 10-15 applicants. We did not contact any applicants we were interested in to prompt them to submit a supplemental.

University of Washington requires a supplemental application and it is included on our website in the list of our application requirements and it can be completed at any time before our interviews.  If applicants ask me if their application is complete, I check to see if they have completed our secondary application.  If someone is selected to interview and they haven’t completed it, I ask them to complete it.  99% of the time it has been completed.

We do a video supplemental application. I send the link out in late October and usually give them one week to complete. We tell them if they don’t complete it that’s okay since it’s a tight turnaround.

My PD asked me the other day if we could make our supplemental application required, but I wasn’t sure if there were any NRMP rules against this. I’ve been looking today, but so far can’t find anything saying we couldn’t do this, unless I’m overlooking it?
