Does your program offer resident travel reimbursement for presenting at a regional or national conference? (Poster/Podium) If so, do you have an approved list of conferences and what stipend do you offer?  We currently offer $1500.00 for travel associated with research presented at a conference and are considering whether or not this is a fair amount).   Does the stipend take into account what part of the country they need to travel to?  (Program in the Northeast but conference in the Southwest)

Journal Clubs – Does your program have a budget for Journal Clubs?  Are all expenses covered including alcohol?  If so, are the Journal Clubs held at a local restaurant?  What is your budget if you have one.

    Thank you

    Good afternoon,

We cover travel to and from a conference in the continental US. One -two nights hotel stay depending on the presentation time.  Additionally, the project they are presenting is expected to be entered into our annual research competition. If they choose to stay for the whole conference, they must use their vacation. Prices vary, so each request is assessed for approval.

Our Journal clubs are held on-site so there is no need for a budget.

    Thanks,

    Hi Tammy,

    Here’s our policy.

Resident Travel Policy for Podium and Paper Presentations:

    • Establish budget – $1500 (i.e. airfare/hotel/registration/food/etc.)
    • One meeting presentation per project – in the event that abstract is accepted to multiple meetings, the resident is to decide what he/she will present, and the faculty will present at the remaining meetings.
    • Resident will travel the day before and the day after presentation(s). They are not required to attend the entire meeting.

Journal Club – our monthly budget is $500. JC is held at a faculty member’s home, and they are reimbursed for both food and alcohol. Anything over $500, they pay for out of pocket.

    Hi Tammy!

WMed has a time/travel award policy available for residents accepted to present hyposthesis-driven research or a case series (3 or more cases, an individual case study is not eligible). They are granted an additional 3 days of professional development time, 2 travel days and the day of the presentation. If they want to attend the full conference, they can use additional professional development or vacation time. For a regional presentation (within 250 miles), they receive $500 toward their expenses. For a national presentation, they receive $1500. If two or more residents need to present, they must split the award. A project may only receive one travel award. For example, it could not be presented both at AAOS and MAOA and receive awards for both presentations. The resident can still present at both meetings, but they must use their own professional development time and funds for the second presentation.

Our monthly Journal Club is held at a restaurant, and we have a billing relationship with that location. Our faculty donate yearly to a fund which finances the meeting. We do not pay for alcohol. Depending on attendance, our bill is between $700 and $900. Prices went up after COVID!

    Laurie
