Bertha (Tica) OrochenaParticipantHello,
I have a situation. One of my residnets failed his Step3. This is actually a first for me because usually my residents always pass their Step3. He is scheduled to re-take it at he end of September. From a coordinaotrs perspective, is there anythng I need to do from my end.
Thanks for the insight!

Lucy SalgadoKeymasterHi Betha
That depends on your GME dept. Per our GME, our residents need to pass step 3 by the end of their PGY2 year. Otherwise, their annual contract will not be provided to them. Talk to your PD. Placing the residents on study plan can be helpful.

Laura BrownKeymasterLike Lucy said, I would check with your GME/policies. We’re also an Osteopathic program, and our state licensing board requires them to pass COMLEX-3 in order to be licensed as a PGY-2. GME policy and their contracts state that they have to be licensed, and can’t be promoted or work without a license. We had our first intern fail to pass on time last year. He signed a PGY1 contract (so PGY1 instead of 2) and got placed on probation until his re-take. If he failed it again, he was out. Feel free to email me if you have questions or want an example of the letter we used: laura.r.brown@okstate.edu

Bertha (Tica) OrochenaParticipantThanks Laura! Like I mentioned, this is a first for me. In all the years as a coordinator, we have been fortunate the residents passed their Step3. I really appreciate we have this platform for guidance.

Amy KrausParticipantYour GME office should also provide any support should you need to file for an extension, if even needed.
Please know that each state has different rules as to how many times someone may take Step 3, in regard to licensure. You may have to supply a letter of approval.
