    Good Morning!

We are looking to restructure how our weekly resident didactics are set up.   We currently have one block of time on Wednesday mornings.  How is yours structured, and do you get good resident attendance?

    Thank you,

    Hi Noreen:

Our program has weekly didactics on Friday mornings from 6:45-10:45 AM.  We have Grand Rounds for an hour then a basic science lecture followed by block conference.  From July-Nov we also add an OITE Review.  Our residents are all required to attend Grand Rounds, after that, only the night float resident and our chiefs on Trauma and Fracture Service are excused from the rest of didactics.  I monitor attendance on MedHub.  We never have a problem with residents not showing up.

    Hi Monica

Can you elaborate on how your OITE review is structured?  We are trying to incorporate a review for this upcoming academic year.

    Hi Noreen

Our weekly conferences, consist of an hour on Wednesday mornings and Thursday from 7:30-11:30am.  On Thursdays the day always start with Grand rounds, followed by either core knowledge, tumor knowledge, basic science and/or surgical skills.  Our faculty fully support our resident’s education time by closing out clinic time every Thursday mornings.   Our resident’s attendance is very high as this is part of their semi-annual review.

    Hi Noreen,

Wednesday morning from 6:30-9:00 am and Friday morning from 6:30-7:30 am is our dedicated academic time for conferences/lectures. It is protected time for the residents and we do not have any issues with attendance. On Wednesdays, our OR doesn’t start until 9am, so it works out prefect.  We also do OITE Reviews on Mondays evenings from 6-8:00 pm with dinner the months of August – November. Journal Club is held monthly on the 2nd Wednesday evening of each month  from 7-8:30 pm at a faculty member’s home. We get a great turn out for our JC. Have food and they will come.  🙂

    Hey All,

Attached is our monthly schedule which is tweaked when we have special opportunities for residents and fellows.  Our Thursday Night Journal Club is once per week and supported by a rep at a local restaurant.  We focus on 2 specialties per month at the journal club.  All resident education is mandatory, we use attendance sheets, Chief Resident and Faculty disapproval for missing it – and no one wants that!  Yes, there are times a resident could be excused by contacting the chief but it is rare.  Education takes place each weekday morning, with a faculty member facilitating 0630-0730 and 0600-0900 on Fridays.  Interns complete their surgical skills during the month of October at Johns Hopkins with several other residencies.

I like Monica and Kim’s OITE Review Mondays – great idea!  We usually include it in daily education during the week prior to November, but maybe more dinners should be added.  🙂

Attached is our OITE Review Schedule (July-Nov).  The role of the attending is to be available to go through the high-yield questions from the Orthobullets test (which is prepared by the assigned resident and shared with the faculty member prior to the review),  with the residents. Faculty knowledge is invaluable in helping the residents work through difficult questions and provides another level of insight on how to approach test questions for OITE and board review.  In addition to OITE on Friday’s, May (through October) we have a weekly OITE Review (on Monday nights at 5:00 PM).  We pay for the residents dinner and whoever wants extra study time is welcome.  It is led by a chief resident.   I’ve also attached our conference schedule for the month which includes a Journal Club and Dissection Lab.
