Our program has a resident wellness committee comprised of only residents. The department buys them: books, i Pads, lead and lead glasses, jackets, the call residents are permitted to send out for food which the department covers, gym memberships, liver rounds once a month plus one monthly wellness activity, golf day, bandage sheers, national conference expenses, and I’m sure there is more. The wellness committee has decided they would like snacks in their computer room, a room for a gym, because most gyms are closed, and more. Not sure where they are getting their ideas from so my Chairman asked me to check with some of the other programs to see what you do.
• Do you give your residents a set amount to be spent on meetings, computers, etc.?
• Do you purchase books, lead, i Pads, etc. for them with do set amount?
• Are there special activities the department pays for as part of ‘resident wellness”?Any information and or comments would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Just to simply answer your questions.
1. Our set amount to go to meetings is $1200. Anything over they pay. We do not purchase them computers however each resident has a $1000 that the GME office provides them every year for 5 years. They can buy books, computers, and pay for medical license etc.
2. We do not purchase leads or ipads however we do pay for their books as most of the books are online and our university library carries that cost. We do provide loops and for that they have a $1000 limit.
3. Unfortunately we do not have extra resident wellness costs. Our PD is an avid hiker and camper and residents and family are always welcome at their cost. One thing that we do is provide the residents with personal scrubs, lab coats, and ortho team jackets.Hope this helps.

Thank you for asking this question, my PD has inquired what others offer as well. Our residents receive a $150 stipend for books in the PGY 1 year. They usually spent it on a study bank for Step 3.
$150 stipend for lead glasses.
We purchase loupes , not lead.PGY 2-5 are allowed one conference a year, the travel budget is adjusted depending on registration and location. Does not exceed $2k. If they get accepted to present a poster we issue a $500 stipend towards travel.
We do not have a wellness budget, and our institution supplies coffee, juice, snacks in the call quarters for all residents.
The residents will plan events for two 5th Fridays a year, but we do not cover the costs.
We supply (3) sets of scrubs and coats, after that it is self pay unless we have left over money.
With Covid this year, we did not spend our graduation budget so we bought new scrubs and coats for everyone.Stay safe,
