    Good morning everyone,

We are looking for additional resources to provide incoming residents on how to log cases through ACGME. Do any of your programs have developed training materials for this purpose? If not, how do you include this in your orientations.

    Thanks!

    Hi Zoe,

During our orientation for the incoming PGY1’s, we have one of our chief residents do an in-service with them showing them how to access and use the ACGME OP Log system. They spend about 3 hours going over this. The chief resident will save some of his/her cases to log and do them with the incoming PGY1’s so that they can see it first-hand.

Yes, I have to agree with Kim, Zoe.  Having a chief resident help the new PGY1, is how we have always completed this training, as well.  This way, if anything has been updated in the process, the upper level resident will be the first to know about it and can pass it on.  The PGY1s also have someone to go to if they have questions later.

Hope this was a help to you!  I wonder if anyone else has another process?

    Hi Zoe.

We have didactic meetings/training every Monday night and Case Logs are part of that training. The case log training modules are usually early in the year and maybe another couple times. The training calendrer is set for two years and adjusted as needed. We made adjustments for resident instruction logging COVID cases, for instance. We elect two chief residents every year from the PGY5 class and they usually conduct the sessions on caselogs.

Good morning, Zoe! Thank you for asking this question.

To piggyback on Zoe’s question, I would like to pose a similar question to the ARCOS community – does your program have your residents to log all of the CPT codes for any given case (i.e. if there are several procedures involved in one case, do your residents enter each of these procedures individually into ADS) or do your residents enter ‘one case’ as ‘one case’ in the case log system?

The topic of how to log cases comes up from time to time in our program.

    Thank you,

    Artina

    Hi Zoe,

We have a “Program Specific” orientation that follows the normal orientation.  I talk with the residents about several things… one being case logging.  I give them the information for the mobile app to encourage completion right away, then our chief resident continues with the training.  Hope this helps!
