Does anyone have any experience with a resident being unavailable to take the OITE due to a family emergency? I’ve already emailed exams@aaos.org to ask what the policy is, but I thought I’d ask here as well. We chose the in-person route, so I asked if it was possible to allow him to take it remotely. I know jumping on another program’s test date is also a thing when the resident is on an outside rotation, but that’s not this situation. Also, the thought of organizing that and throwing it on another coordinator makes me die a little inside.

So. Has anyone dealt with this before?

We’ve had a resident on maternity leave over the OITE testing period one year. AAOS wouldn’t allow her to take it another time for her score to be counted towards the PGY/Program scores, so she just skipped the exam that year.  I’ve also had residents not available on our designated testing day, so I proctored them in-person on another day within the 2 week window, and AAOS never questioned it. Hope that helps!

    Hi Laura!

We have a resident who may be on parental leave for our exam day this year. I did contact AAOS Exams team to ask, as we are testing in person as a group on a single day. They said we could pick an additional day within the testing window for that resident to complete the test, as long as we specified the date with the Exams team in advance and provided 2 proctors to test in person. Since we don’t know when the baby might arrive, we could not choose an alternate date. We are proceeding as planned, fingers crossed! But if our resident has to miss the exam day, he will just skip the exam this year. He is allowed to take the test when it releases in January after the score reports are issued, but he won’t get an individual score report and he would not be included in the full department metrics.
