Have any of you ever had a resident go out on leave, then come back and “make up” time away with their vacation time? I know that this is an option, but I’m confused about how that works. For instance, a PGY 4 who has 1 week left of vacation this AY goes on maternity leave for the last 6 weeks of 2018-2019. Does she then have her PGY 4 contract “pay” extended, and for how long? If this is the case, she’s down to 5 weeks that she has to make up for being away from program. Say she takes 1 week vacation next year (because that’s mandatory), and uses the other 3 weeks to “make time up”. That leaves us to extend her 2 weeks in her PGY 5 year, is that correct? Also, does that mean that she is just “OUT” that compensation? She’d be paid for her vacation time if she was really off, and now she’ll be working. Does that make sense? I’m sure someone out there has experience with this….please help.

    Thank you,
    Kelli
