    Hi all,

I am wondering how many of you have dealt with residents trying to be excused from Jury Duty because of their residency training? We have varying opinions on how to handle this in our new program and would like to reach out to more established programs to see their protocol? Do you help residents with an excuse note, do you have them handle on their own, etc.?

As always, thank you for taking the time to respond…this community is very helpful to us in our new program..

    Hi Cynthia
I help residents with an excuse letter as long as they provide me with their notice in a timely manner.

    Hi Cynthia –

We also help residents with an excuse letter. We just ask that they call to make sure the letter was received and confirm they have been excused.

In Miami, doctors are no longer excused. Now, if you cannot make the date assigned to you, they ask you to choose a date when you can make it and then they automatically re-assign you to that date. They do not notify you again and you must show up on the date you selected.

Our PD’s position is that no one is excused from Jury Duty. As Carmen mentioned, if there is a real conflict with the first date assigned, they can opt for a second date, with the understanding there is no getting out of the 2nd date. We have not yet run into any issues with residents being assigned to long-term jury duty.
