Has anyone ever sent any of their residents out of the country during their residency? If so- what was the process and how did you fund the trip? I have a PGY 5 that is planning to go to Kenya for 10 weeks with a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and a medical mission group. I know the RRC has a process which is fairly simple, but our GME is telling me that they will not pay her salary or benefits since it is at a ‘non-participating site,’ and is an ‘elective rotation.’ We received money from a donor for her to go, and I also added money to our budget in anticipation for some funding but not her salary…I am going to calculate her PTO from previous years to make sure that this time away doesn’t interfere with her board eligibility, but she’ll have already met the ABOS minimums for adult orthopaedics, fractures/trauma, children’s orthopedics, and basic and/or clinical specialties, as well as her case log minimums per ACGME. I am also wanting to know how you were able to streamline the process and plan for it (in case I have residents in the future that are interested) and if it impacted graduation, or if I should anticipate any backlash? This is a first for our residency and I do not want her to have to give back time to the residency and delay her fellowship and/or board exam.
thank you.
