Hello All:
The UT-Campbell Clinic Orthopaedic Residency Program is reviewing our current resident education fund provided to the residents in their PGY1 year. In preparation for the review, our Education Committee would like data on what other programs are doing. Do you mind sharing your program’s education fund amount? Also, it would be to helpful to know if the funds are provided once or yearly throughout the length of the residency. One example that Orthopaedic Surgery reimburses for (without a deduction from their education fund) are podium presentation expenses for airfare, hotel, registration, and food at educational conferences.
I am not looking for a great deal of detail, only a few points such as those mentioned above. I appreciate any information you are willing to share. Thank you so much for your attention and time.

Here is the information for how our residents can use their education funds. Our Ortho Service line also pays for such things as lead and required conferences, too, outside of the education allowance given by the Hospital. I hope you find this useful!

Outside of the stipend, the residency buys loupes for each resident but we have a payback system where we ask them to re-pay us for the loupes 2 years after they graduate. Like you, if someone is doing a podium presentation of original research, that travel is funded through the department where the research was based (we are 4 hospitals).Of note, we only recently added the $2,600 contribution after 4th year. That was originally specifically dedicated (program support outside of the stipend) for PGY-5 residents’ attending a Board review course. But we found they weren’t all attending the course, so we decided to just let them do what they want with that money instead of reserving it specifically for a Board Review.

Our residents are University of Tennessee HSC employees and we (Campbell Clinic) are the Orthopaedic branch of the GME. Does either of your GME offices provide the funds for reimbursement or are the being pulled from another source? Let me know when you get a moment. Thank you so much for this information.

I’ve attached a file which outlines our policy regarding educational expenses. In addition to what is covered in the policy, we purchase loupes for all of our residents during their intern year, and we pay for everyone to have access to Orthobullets and JBJS Clinical Curriculum. We also support two PGY-4 residents to attend the AOA Resident Leadership Forum each year and, beginning this year, we support two residents to attend the ORS Grantsmanship Course.
Thanks very much,
Robin Sasaoka

They get loopes, radiation glasses and full access to Orthobullets and we pay for Step 3. In addition, we give them a total of $1100 for their entire residency to be spent on educational items (Books, Laptops, subscriptions etc.).
Hope that helps!
Thanks,

Currently, we provide $1500 for the entire residency that can be used for laptops, loupes, lead, and step 3. We have noticed that once they purchase loupes and lead, their funds are exhausted. We were looking to get a feel for what other Ortho residency programs were doing as well as other UT residencies.
Thanks again. Good luck on the election! 🙂 -
