I know there is a case minimum for residents to graduate. My question is there a rule of thumb for how many of each type of cases a resident should have under their belt for each year of training? For example, a PGY-2 resident should have so many pediatric cases by the end of their second year? Just wondering as I’m with a new program, and we just want to make sure we are keeping our guys on track to graduate. Thank you, Ashley

Ashley~ Those numbers will be very program dependent as not all programs rotation schedules are set up the same. For example, my residents don’t do Peds until their PGY-3 year so they wouldn’t have an Peds (with the exception of call) cases until that year. So it won’t be an easy thing to compare with other programs. That information you will have to establish over time based on your residents experience and case volume. Another option to consider is to look at the case log requirements and have someone in your billing department run a report to see what the departmental numbers are for those cases based on an academic year. Another piece of information to consider is which of your faculty members are doing those cases and what the residents involvement is with those faculty members.
