Greetings everyone!
Many of you may be wondering about the announcement regarding the collaboration of the ABOS KSB and the ACGME. If you did not receive an email from Dr Taitsman it is detailed for you below. Mona and I spoke today and she asked me to relay to you that this transition will be a process, and some programs will transition sooner than others. The ABOS will be leading us every step of the way and more communications will be coming soon. We plan to hold a virtual session in the fall with the ABOS/KSB folks when they feel there is ample information to share. At this busy time in our programs it’s good to know that we can continue our important on-boarding and graduation events and we can wait to follow the lead of the ABOS/KSB and ACGME. All the best! ~Laurel
Please feel free to put this message on ARCOS member message board. We will be sending emails with thorough directions and materials on how this tool will be made available to your programs. Continue to do exactly what you’ve been doing with regards to ACGME Case Logs and ABOS KSB until further notice. ~Mona

Subject: ABOS KSB and Collaboration with ACGME
Orthopaedic Surgery Program Directors and Associate Program Directors,
It was so nice to see many of you at the American Orthopaedic Association Council of Orthopaedic Residency Directors (AOA/CORD) meeting last week (in Utah). As I announced there, orthopaedic residents at all Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited Orthopaedic Residency Education Programs planning to participate in the ABOS Certification process, will be required to participate in the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) Knowledge, Skills & Behavior (ABOS KSB) Program starting July 1, 2025.
In addition, the ABOS is proud to announce a new collaboration with the ACGME to integrate orthopaedic resident Case Log entry into the ABOS KSB web portal and mobile app. In one place, residents can now enter their case logs as required by the ACGME and also easily request ABOS KSB Surgical Skills Assessments on selected cases. This collaboration between the ABOS and ACGME provides residents the opportunity to request and receive formative feedback while allowing easy access to logging surgical cases. Residents will log all of their ACGME Case Logs via the ABOS app and/or web portal for this program.
Beginning this summer, those residency programs already onboarded in ABOS KSB will start transitioning to the new web portal/app. Residency programs not currently enrolled in the ABOS KSB Program will be able to join over the next two years to utilize the new integrated web portal/app. ABOS staff will reach out to you about how to enroll/transfer your orthopaedic residency program.
All surgical residents in ACGME-accredited programs (no matter the discipline) must enter Case Logs for the ACGME. The ABOS is the first board to collaborate with the ACGME to offer a tool that integrates the entry of ABOS’s KSB surgical skills requirements with the ACGME’s Case Log Entry requirements. Residents will log all of their ACGME Case Logs via the ABOS KSB app or Web Portal. All cases must be logged, not just cases that a resident is submitting for ABOS KSB Surgical Skills assessments.
The ABOS’s mission is to protect the public by setting standards for competence and education through each stage of an orthopaedic surgeon’s career, beginning with residency training.
Graduate Medical Education is transitioning from time-based programs for the acquisition of knowledge and skills to promoting competency-based curricula. Validated tools to measure competency are critical to this transition. The ABOS has instituted the ABOS KSB Program to provide assessment tools with the necessary technology in the areas of knowledge, surgical skills, and professional behavior to assist in the transition to competency-based medical education.
Thank you to all of the Program Directors, Program Coordinators and residents who have provided feedback. I appreciate the many suggestions and the engaging discussion at the recent AOA/CORD meeting. Future communications will provide additional details as we move towards universal participation.

Lisa A. Taitsman, MD, MPH
