    Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out in hopes of receiving some feedback from other medical student programs. No need to answer all!

    1. One of our program leaders is interested in exploring a randomized placement process for home students and visiting sub-Is across our different subspecialty rotations to help mitigate bias. Currently, students submit rotation applications and preference them in VSLO and we schedule based on their materials and our availability. Has anyone heard of a program assigning students their rotation rather than them applying for a specific one?
    2. How does your program evaluate student performance? Does your program require an end of rotation presentation or exam? If you have an exam, who creates it and how often?
    3. How does your program administer visiting sub-i evaluations to faculty?

I appreciate your time in advance!

    Thank you,
    Jessica Jin

    Hi Jessica,

For us, students apply for rotations through VSLO and have the ability to apply to multiple blocks. I then place them based on our availability. As we get closer to the rotation start date, we send them a form to rank their preferences for which subspecialties they would like to rotate through. We have them rotate on two different subspecialties, two weeks on each service.

Students are asked to give at least one presentation during the rotation (taking place during the subspecialty conference). Most students end up doing two presentations, one on each service.

At the end of the rotation, we send a surveymonkey to our residents and faculty and ask them to complete it on any students they worked with (the form has about 10 questions to answer). When the student provides us with their school’s evaluation form, one of our APD’s reviews all of the feedback we received to help complete the form, particularly if it is a student the APD did not work with directly.

    Hope this helps

    Good Morning,

We have our students apply through VSLO. A week before their rotation I send out a schedule to them and place them where they get to experience a new ortho specialty each week for the 4 weeks. So, week one would be on spine, week 2 would be on hand, week 3 would be trauma, and week 4 joint recon. I do this for each student that way everyone gets a chance to see their skills and get to know them.

We have an evaluation sheet that we use (attached). They give it to the attending at the end of each week, and they turn them into me that way when interview season comes around, they can all remember who the students were. The residents also host an exit interview with the students so they can have their input about them as well.

They also do a presentation at the end of their rotation on a topic of their choice.

My school enters each individual elective experience.  We struggle with applicants applying to every single rotation elective and multiple dates ranges so we can get 30 applications for 1 medical student.  If they didn’t apply for one that I have available we have to ask them to submit another application and I have had complaints about the cost.  It would be so much easier to get my school just to enter a month long Ortho experience so that I have flexibility as to which services I can assign them to.  Has anyone had experience in getting their schools to change the way the list things in VSLO?

I have one course option in VSLO – split into the various 4-week rotation blocks. So yes, could have 3-4 applications for one student if they applied for multiple blocks.
I draft a summary schedule so the visiting students work two weeks with the PD and two weeks with the Chair. Both PD and Chair spend time throughout the week at sites the students can’t go to so they’ll be assigned with other faculty onsite. That also allows opportunity to work with the group and all that, etc.  The admin chief resident manages the actual day-to-day assignments based on clinical care schedules. Students can request to work a certain case if interested, or with a specific faculty if they have a connection, etc.

No formal written exam. Yes, case presentation. For home students, our internal evaluation platform calculates final grades for me based on the completed evaluations.

For visiting students I do not need to calculate a final grade. I give the evaluation form from the host school to the PD and Chair to complete. That keeps it easy on me so I’m not tracking down evaluations all over. That’s who spends the most time with them after all.

I do ask for feedback from the whole group in the sense of interviewing and rank because we do not formally invite the visitors back for interviews as they interview while already here.

Thanks you all! This is really helpful. To help gauge feasibility, how many visiting students does your program host, how big is your medical student program in terms of number of clerkships and faculty, and how big is your residency?

Echoing Viveka, as well. Any programs require students to apply for the blocks they are available (e.g. Summer A, B, C) as opposed to a specific clerkship (e.g. Trauma, Sports, Peds)?

    Hi Jessica,

Our Institution uses VSLO for applicants to apply for a rotation. When on a one-month rotation each student will do one weekend of call and they will do a presentation at the end of rotation.

We do not bring our rotators back for an interview, so we make sure they understand the rotation is the interview. They will meet for a 10 min interview with the PD and APD.  They are assigned Ortho books when they start the rotation, we let them know the evaluation will not be released until the books are returned.
