    Hello! Could anyone share how your institution handles board review courses for your chief residents. Does your program pay for Miller Review for all of your residents to attend/participate? Do you apply for grants to support the costs or have other fundraising avenues? Do you provide PTO for the length of the course? Does anyone do an “in-house” board review course? Thanks for any input you have!

    Hi Anna!

    Our program has an annual grant from a local foundation that pays for our residents’ registration to attend the virtual AAOS board review, or the Miller review virtually if there is a conflict with AAOS. We consider the board review part of the PGY5 curriculum since we encourage them to participate, and we don’t charge PTO.

    Our program allows the chief class to vote on what course they would like to attend (they do this the Jube prior to PGY5).

    We register them for the course, typically Miller Review, and set up their Spend Authorizations / Expense Reports in accounting.

    As a program, we pay for the course, travel, accommodations, ground transport, and meals.

    The time away is coded as training.

    As part of our conference schedule, we send each class PGY2 – PGY5 to a department assigned course, in the PGY5 year, it is Miller’s.  We pay for registration, travel, hotel, transportation to/from airport/hotel and the receive a per diem for meals.  This is an annual budgeted expense.  They time away is considered training and they log the hours they are in the meeting sessions.  Travel days, as long as it is not a meeting day as well, count as days off.
