Melissa TrimbleParticipantHello everyone!
Our program is working on a new rotation schedule for next academic year. Would anyone be willing to share their schedule with me? We are trying to see how other programs create their schedules with 8 residents. Feel free to de-identify your trainees, I am looking more for the blocks/times spent on each rotation.
Thank you,
Melissa

Melissa TrimbleParticipantThank you! I find it helpful to see how other program layout their schedules.
I should have said 8 residents per year and not only 8 residents.
We have a compliment of 35. We are losing one and unable to find a good match for that PGY level, which is where the 8th resident coming in complicates the schedule. We ideally want to keep their rotations 7.5-8 weeks each.
Next academic year will look something like this:”messy”
PGY5 – 6 Residents (6) 2 month block rotations
PGY4 – 7 Residents (7) 7.5 week block rotation
PGY3 – 6 Residents (6) 2 month block rotations
PGY2 – 8 Residents – Leave as 7 rotations and double up or move to 8 rotations?
PGY1 – 7 Residents – typical PGY1 year.February 5, 2026 at 2:05 pm #8728
Courtney MatlachKeymasterHi Melissa,
My program historically had 6 residents per year, all completing six 2-month rotations, so everyone switched rotations at the same time. Two years ago, we were approved for 7 residents per year, which led us to change the schedule.
For the 7-resident classes, we moved to seven ~7.5-week rotations. Since not all classes are at 7 yet, we currently have staggered switches. It’s a little more complex from a scheduling standpoint, but we’ve found it helps with patient care and continuity since the whole team isn’t turning over at once.
