Hello, was wondering if others have a pre interview social event?  If so, what does it look like?  We are looking to do things differently and have 40 candidates plus our 19 current residents.  Thank you in advance for your feedback!

    Hi Jennifer

We host a pre-interview event at a restaurant/bar in the downtown area for our applicants and residents only.  we serve only appetizers and drinks.

    Hey Jennifer!

We do a pre-interview social event the night before for applicants, spouses, residents, and residents’ spouses. It’s typically at a local bar in Chattanooga. We have a food bar, drink, and they bowl.

We also host a pre-interview meet and greet at a local bar/restaurant for applicants, current residents and faculty who are interviewing the following day. Food is buffet style and available throughout the event as well as an “open” bar.

    Hi Jennifer

I only have a Sports Medicine Fellowship, so my interviews are in a smaller scale-of course. But, we plan to take applicants to our TRIA suite at the Hockey Arena- we cover the MN Wild so we have a suite assigned to us a few of the many home games. The problem is that I can only take 30 people, including me and 2 of my 3 current fellows, so I do not allow faculty to attend (my PD is the Team Physician for the MN Wild, so he is there covering the game and shows up for a bit-and the 3rd fellow is usually covering games too) so I keep a ‘first comes, first serves’ RSVP list and take the first 27 applicants that say yes… That also helps me identify ‘responsible’ residents that plan ahead… LOL 😉

This is our second year back to in-person. We do interviews Friday afternoon and Saturday morning with the social night for all candidates Friday evening. Its totally optional for the candidates. For some it would be after the interview day and for others its the night before.

Residents are expected – I’d like for faculty to come as well.

Last year we hosted at a local event venue downtown Toledo. This year we’re hosting on main campus/Savage Arena in the suite that overlooks the basketball court — had a push from administration to host events on campus so we’re trying it out. Catered with drink tickets. I’m looking forward to it; should be pretty cool venue for future orthopods/ sports and all 🙂

    Hey there!

I’m in Detroit and our ortho department are the physicians for our major sports teams, so we are hosting dinner and drinks 6-9pm at the Detroit Pistons Performance Center! It is pretty casual with just myself, the applicants, and the current residents attending.

We have interviews 2 days in a row, so we have a social the night between at a local brewery –  it’s just for our candidates, residents and a few of the faculty that want to go; come and go as they please for a few hours; light buffet, drinks, corn hole…

We do half our interviews in the afternoon on day 1, social with everyone that night and the rest of the interviews the following morning on day 2.

    Hi Jennifer,

I have eight fellowships, here is what we typically do for each:

Hand Fellowship – Considering an axe-throwing venue this year with catered food and cider/beer the evening before interview day. Prior to this we have reserved a private space in a restaurant.
Sports Fellowship – Traditionally attends a hockey or basketball game, but this year they plan to go to TopGolf. They have two interview days (Fri/Sat) and will host the social on Friday.
Shoulder Fellowship – Interviews on one day. Previously hosted at a home with catered food, tables, and drinks. This year, they want a specific restaurant with a private room that exceeds the budget; they will cover the remaining personally. Previously had the social at one of their homes or a pub.
Foot/Ankle Fellowship – Small group with two interview days. The evening before each, they plan a regular restaurant reservation.
Pediatric Fellowship – Two interview dates. The social is the evening before each,  They prefer a brewery we’ve used for several years a little ways up the canyon and another restaurant in a popular area.
Joints Fellowship – Large group with one interview day. They typically choose a brewery for their social. They just started doing this last year, previously they didn’t host a social.
Spine Fellowship – Two interview dates (Fri/Sat). They host the social at one of their homes, and I assist with ordering food, tables, drinks, mixers, and arrangements.
Sarcoma Fellowship – Similar to Foot/Ankle. Two interview dates with a dinner at a restaurant the evening before each.

For each fellowship, the current fellows, applicants, and some residents attend.

    I hope this helps!

My residency program dinner in Utah is also HUGE. We have 70 applicants and their SO’s, plus 45 faculty and 30 residents for one social dinner. We hold it at a faculty’s home with a full service catered buffet that includes alcohol. We rent extra tables, linens, china and glassware as needed, and we reimburse cleaning fees. Parking can be an issue, depending on whose house we use. Last year we provided shuttles to/from our orthopaedic center to manage the parking and  weather. It can be snowy in January…

Greetings:  We hold our event the night before at a really cool and trendy restaurant.  It’s a very unique place and we make it laid back to include their great appetizers/fare/drinks being served while everyone mingles. Some people arrive directly from the airport, and we pay for Uber to get them back to the hotel we pay for. Those already at the hotel we pay for roundtrip Uber shuttle.  Good luck with all.  – Donna
