ParticipantGood afternoon…
I am looking to gather some financial information. Do your programs cover any or all of the following?
Step 3, Loupes, and AO Basic Course. Does the program cover it or does the resident have to use educational funds?
Thank you all in advance:)

ParticipantHi Kierstin,
We, Johns Hopkins pay for their loupes and a lead apron when they finish intern year. We do assist financially with an AO Basic and Advanced course, or another course they are interested in taking. BUT, they need to work with me to apply for an education grant to assist with payment for registration, travel, hotel, and other expenses. Here is a link to get started with the grant, Education Grants & Fellowships | DePuy Synthes | J&J MedTech US.

ParticipantThe educational funds we issue to our PGY1 residents is earmarked for Step 3. The program pays for loupes, lead/glasses, and the OKU textbook from our general budget. The program also offers up to $2,000 per-resident allowance if they want to attend AO Basic, which is paid by our faculty/alumni donation fund.

KeymasterWe cover everything – Step 3 (first attempt only), Loupes, Lead Glasses, and Lead. Each resident gets to attend one conference per year fully funded (it’s determined by us which ones). AO Basics is the one we send our interns to. Thanks!

ParticipantHi Kierstin,
At OHSU, our GME office pays for Step 3. Our department pays for loupes for our interns, and we pay to send the PGY-2s to AO Basic. However, I do apply for a grant to cover at least a portion of the AO Basic course expenses. Thank you!

ParticipantAt the University of Utah, we pay for Step 3, Loupes, Lead, and ABOS Part I. We also cover 1 course or conference per PGY 2-5 year. AO Basic is usually completed in the second year.

KeymasterUniversity of Colorado covers Loupes, and AO Basic Course. We do try to get Grants for AO but that is getting tough. Step 3 they use their education funds.

KeymasterAt Loyola, we provide them a stipend that is required to be used towards our mandatory assigned courses and books. We also provided additional funding if they are presenting. We do not cover loupes or step 3. We apply for funding for the AO basic courses as well.

ParticipantAt University of Florida – Jacksonville, we purchase Loupes (one-time). We fund one course for PGY2 -5, I apply for the grant for the AO basic and we give a $150 stipend towards lead glasses and $150 stipend towards books. Each resident gets ResStudy and Orthobullets for the 5 years.
Happy Friday Match Day 🙂

ParticipantLate to this, but at UC San Diego, the department provides a $650 Lead stipend, and if presenting, pays for the registration, flight, 2 nights of a hotel and 3 days of food for. They also have Academic Enrichment Funds (AEF) that they can use for additional conferences, trainings or loupes.
For the programs that pay for loupes, do you have a limit? Some of our residents have spent all of their AEF on their loupes (almost 3k!)

KeymasterHi Shawna,
Our program pays for loupes for our incoming class. We pay for 2.5x standard field loupes, which usually are about $1200 each. We don’t pay for headlights or any additional features.

KeymasterAt the University of Chicago we cover quite a few things:
– Loupes (2.5x standard) and lead (vest, skirt and thyroid shield) fittings are held for interns during orientation
– A course/meeting is funded at each PGY level (e.g. OTA, AO Basic, AAOS, Miller Review)
– Residents are given and education fund (formerly the ‘book’ fund) – $2,750 over the course of 5 years – to use on educational materials/fees (e.g. Step 3, Part I registration, etc). The amount provided each PGY year fluctuates based on what expenses are expected for the residents.
Happy to porvide more information if needed.
Annie
