    As the University of Miami Department of Orthopedics is committed to developing a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment for its patients, trainees, and faculty, we are happy to offer the University of Miami / Jackson Memorial Hospital Orthopaedic Surgery Visiting Medical Student Diversity Scholarship to provide financial assistance for 4th year medical students who are planning a career in orthopaedic surgery and want to do a four-week rotation with us.
    Women and diverse students whose backgrounds and/or identities are underrepresented in orthopaedics are encouraged to apply. The chosen applicants will be provided a stipend of $1,500 to be used towards their food, housing and/or travel expenses. Scholarship awardees will be strongly considered for an interview.

    Scholarship Includes
    – One-month clinical clerkship
    – Mentorship by Department of Orthopaedic Surgery faculty member
    – Financial assistance: $1,500

    Applicant Requirements
    – Must be an upcoming 4th year medical student at a domestic LCME-accredited medical school who plans to enter residency July 2024
    – Provide a current CV
    – Upload an unofficial transcript
    – Provide one (1) letter of recommendation from a professional reference who can speak to your goals and academic experience
    – Provide a personal statement (maximum 300 words) addressing how you contribute to diversity in orthopaedics
    – Provide Step 1 score by uploading USMLE unofficial transcript

    There will be no visiting student rotations after 10/25/25.

    How to apply
    -Submit required documents via Qualtrics Form (CV, letter of recommendation, personal statement)
    -Deadline for application is 3/31/2024
    -Applicant will be notified no later than 4/10/24

    Selection Process
    We will select four (4) students for the scholarship. Selection will be based on a holistic approach. Students’ academic achievements, leadership, academic research, orthopedic interest, and good academic standing will be considered when selecting candidates.
