    Hello Fellow Coordinators,

    Happy Friday to you all.

I am curious if anyone knowa if there are significantly less appliants in the Orthopedic Match this cycle.  Our total applicant number are significantly less than previously years.  I am looking to find an explanation for this.

Please weigh in if your number are down as well.  Or if you are able to point me the right direction to find this information, that would also be helpful.

If you wish to reach out directly, my email is lhamann1@pennstatehealth.psu.edu .

    Thank you,

    Lynne – PSU

    Hi Lynne:

My program director and I were looking at the low number of applications our program had yesterday (about 300 less) and she said that’s a good thing.  She said instead of applicants applying to every single program in the U.S. they are only applying to the ones they are really interested in going to.  I think this was discussed at a CORD meeting and PD’s were asked to help spread the word to med students about not applying to everything.

Good morning, Lynne! Happy Friday to you as well!

Yes, our application numbers are down about 150 from last year. My program director is speculating that with signaling, perhaps the powers that be are achieving their hope to bring the applications to a more manageable number.

I would also be interested to hear if this is a trend other programs are noting this year.

    Thanks for posting the question!

    Hi-

We received about 100 less applications compared to last year but did get more signals this time around. Our guess was that people who didn’t signal us decided not to apply at all.

    Lynne,

Interesting you mentioned this as we have less total applications than in years past as well. I’m relieved that it’s a trend across the board.

Good Morning, We have about 150 less.  The coordinator Facebook Group was talking about this too.  It seems to be happening in other specialties too.  Seems like signaling is working to reduce the number of programs that students apply to.  This is a good thing! We do have more signals than last year.

    Same here.

About half the amount as last year, more signals, and just an overall better quality. I think the half I’m missing are the desperation applicants who throw at everything, hoping something will stick. Like everyone else said, I think the strategies are working.

    Good morning,

Our numbers are down by almost 200 applications this year, so it seems like signaling is working!

Same concerns for Fellowship Match Apps, as we are 1/4 the amount we have typically received over the years.
