    Hi all,

Would anyone mind sharing how they fill out their programs’/residents’ RRA forms in terms of parental/medical leaves? I’ve found it challenging to get an answer from ABOS in terms of what the “right” thing to do is– I’ve been told some programs report how many weeks the residents was scheduled to rotate (i.e. reported that they completed 12 weeks of pediatrics, when in reality they were out for 6 weeks on parental leave so only actually completed 6 weeks of training, but were scheduled for 12)– while other programs report only the amount of weeks actually spent on the rotation (not including any parental or medical leaves).

We certainly track internally in our program how many weeks of training our residents complete (we make sure they never go below 46 weeks averaged over 5 years)– but I wasn’t sure what the best way to report on RRA forms.

Any advice or experience you have would be great– thanks!

    Hi Anna,

I reported the time away from the program. One of my PGY1’s was on maternity leave and missed her 4 week peds ortho and 4 week skills rotations. The skills were just made up with extra teaching through the end of the year. I reported 20 weeks of ortho and then in question 4 I just copied what I put in the letter we had to send to the ABOS earlier this year explaining her FMLA and our plan to make up the deficit. In her case, it’s 4 weeks of ortho that she’s missing which she’ll make up by averaging at least 46 and no more than 50 weeks of education over the course of her PGY2-5.

    Hope that helps!

I am following this thread. We have our first resident taking maternity in our program this year.  I will have to report next year and plan to deduct the weeks of leave.

@Mara Sweet – I didn’t know we had to do a letter to the board for a leave?  Do you know where I can find the details on that?

I just asked Sonya Parker at ABOS if I needed to send a letter reporting a maternity leave or just report via RRA forms since I also have a resident on maternity leave and I didn’t think about a letter. This was her response:

“Please report through the RRA forms, if the resident will not complete their education with their graduating class, we do require a letter indicating the remediation plan for the resident to complete their education. If they are going to be a late graduate or make up additional time other than through averaging PGY-2–PGY-5, we will need a letter.”

So it sounds like if they don’t need to make up time, you just report what they’ve done via RRA Forms. I plan to indicate that she was on a LOA in the comments.  I hope this helps.

Yes, my intern did FMLA earlier this year, so that’s why I did a letter to the ABOS because she was under the 46 weeks and the new RRA wasn’t up and running yet!

    Hello,

I have so far been able to complete some of my residents RRA but I have hit an issue.  The Orthopaedic requirements beyond th PGY1 requires 46 weeks of fractures/trauma.  We do have trauma but how can I justify fractures? Just find it confusing when Ortho is all fractues and trauma.

    Thanks for yor help!

Just put how many weeks they spent on a Trauma rotation/service. Here’s a screenshot of my PGY4s.

I tried to edit my post but it seems to have died in the cloud somewhere.

Don’t let the “fracture” part trip you up. This is in reference to their schedule and time spent there, not cases. Trauma in this sense is in reference to traumatic bone injuries seen in an emergency/trauma setting.
