Program description:
The Sports Medicine Fellowship offers exposure to all areas of sports medicine, including knee, shoulder, elbow, and ankle surgery as well as hip arthroscopy. The fellow will be within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. The responsibilities will involve a close relationship with all the attendings in the sports clinic as well as in the operating room. Fellows will interact with and teach residents and medical students. Educational program includes sports medicine and departmental conferences and journal clubs. Team coverage and event management are part of the educational experience with professional and collegiate sports (at the Division 1 and 2 and junior college levels) as well as other professional, recreational and competitive events. Exposure to arthroscopic sports medicine procedures as well as open reconstructive procedures of the knee, shoulder, ankle, hip and elbow comprise the operative experience. Operative time is available both in the outpatient and inpatient settings. The department will send the fellow to one major conference. One day a week is allotted for research. Research opportunities exist in biomechanics, stem cell and tissue engineering, radiology and clinical outcomes. Cadaver lab facilities are available at Stanford for training and research as well as an onsite Arthroscopy Skills laboratory. The fellow is expected to publish a peer review journal article prior to completion of the fellowship. Applicants must have a California Medical License and be Board Certified or Board eligible in Orthopaedic Surgery before beginning the Fellowship.
