Hello Everyone!
We finally achieved initial accreditation! It has been a long hard road but we did it. 🙂
We are trying to recruit for at least 1 open PGY 2 sopt. Most of our applicants have completed a year in general surgery and want our PGY 2 spot. I found the below in the program requirements. Wanted to see if any programs out there recruited a PGY 2 resident who has only completed general surgery their PGY1?
Are PGY-1 residents permitted to complete
an intern year in a general surgery program
and enter the orthopaedic surgery program
at the PGY-2 level[Program Requirement: IV.C.3.]In rare instances, a resident who has completed an intern year in a general surgery
program may apply for admission into an orthopaedic surgery program at the PGY-2
level. For such an application to be considered, the general surgery program director
must provide documentation, acceptable to the orthopaedic surgery program director,
the Review Committee, and the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS), that
all orthopaedic surgery requirements for the PGY-1 have been met.Hope to see everyone at the next ARCOS meeting!
Thanks,
Amanda

Congratulations!!!
I have done it twice. The key to that statement is all orthopaedic surgery requirements for the PGY-1 have been met, which doesn’t typically happen unless they haven’t completed the general surgery year and you can work with that PD to customize it to meet requirements. That being said, I have also received approval from the ABOS for someone who was short on requirements, we just had to make that time up during their ortho PGY-2 – PGY-5 years. I’m would be happy to talk further with you about this, if you would like. You can contact me at cthompson@hsc.wvu.edu or 304-293-1168.
