Thank you for sharing this Viveka!  ARCOS – is anyone else offering scholarships like this? WE are considering doing it for our visiting students, but since our medical school selects the students and it’s handled completely outside of the residency program, I’m not sure how we’re going to set this up. Looking for some brains to pick!

Hi Jen! Western Michigan University Stryker School of Medicine (WMed) also offers diversity scholarships for visiting medical students who are underrepresented in medicine. Students apply online from the WMed website with a separate scholarship application, along with the VSLO application. The application process is managed by our visiting student application team for the medical school. Our department reviews all visiting student applications for acceptance but the application team manages all the documentation and onboarding process. Housing is offered (subject to availability) and there is a $1000 scholarship to cover the cost of travel, food and other expenses.

    Hi,

The University of Cincinnati also offers a Diversity Scholarship for visiting medical students.

Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Clerkship Program

One of our diversity goals is to increase racial and ethnic diversity reflecting the population of the Cincinnati and surrounding community that we serve. To that end, the ODEI is now sponsoring the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children’s Underrepresented in Medicine Visiting Clerkship Program. We will sponsor up to 12 funded visiting clerkship positions, space permitting, available from July through October for applicants from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine.  This program will provide a stipend up to $1500, to help defray the cost of an away rotation, to 4th year medical students attending a U.S. medical school from backgrounds that are underrepresented in medicine including Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American/Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander.

Our program includes a 4-week clinical rotation in the departments of Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurology Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery and Pediatrics.

    I hope this helps, Jen.

    Hello everyone!

UMMC offers the below opportunity for incoming rotators.

Sub Intern Scholarship for Underrepresented Minorities and Women in Orthopaedics
The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) has a storied history of training highly skilled orthopaedic surgeons from across the state and the country. We believe this is the best kept secret in orthopedic residency and would put our program up against any other program in the country. The only way to truly appreciate all that we have to offer is by coming and spending four weeks rotating with us in Jackson to experience the vast volume and focused orthopaedic education that UMMC has to offer. Furthermore, at UMMC we recognize the strength and value of diversity and are making considerable efforts to increase diversity in our program. To this end, we have created scholarships to encourage women and those minorities underrepresented in Medicine to complete orthopaedic rotations in Jackson. A total of four scholarships in the amount of $3,500 and another four scholarships in the amount of $2000 will be awarded for the upcoming year to help offset travel and living expenses during their four-week rotation with our department.

    Hope this offers some inspiration.

    Nathan

    Hello,

At Brown we offer 4  $1,500 scholarships a year for URM students.  The application is separate from the VSLO application and all of it is handled through the Brown clerkship office.  We do review all applications and choose the recipients, Brown handles the financials and invoices the department.  I hope this information is helpful.
