    Good morning everyone –

It appears that there is some confusion about the new option of taking the OITE remotely this year. I spoke to Maria Incrocci, Associate Director of the OITE, last week and wanted to share some information with everyone from our conversation.

If you decide to go with the remote testing and proctoring, your entire program has to take the exam on the same day, Saturday, November 14th. You cannot split it up between multiple days.

I brought it to Maria’s attention that although the new format sounds really great, there will be issues with this new format due to call coverage for many programs. I have asked if they could allow for 2 days for the remote testing. Not realizing that this could be an issue, she is going to discuss this with the committee and let me know.

I just wanted to share this information with everyone so that you can plan accordingly and not run into any issues later with the remote testing by not clearly understand how this new format will work.

    Thanks,
    Kim

Thank you for this update, Kim. Is there any idea when a decision will be made on allowing two days for remote testing?

If we choose to proctor the exam the same way we have in the past (prior to COVID) there should be no change, correct? I’ve always had our program take the test on the same day. The only thing I am doing differently this year is having two computer labs (right next to each other) so they can social distance while taking the exam and I am still able to monitor both rooms.

Can we change how we are going to do the test if they don’t allow 2 days?? This information would have been great to have when they asked us how we were going to take the test.

I brought this up at the meeting we had with them. One person told me that we could. I don’t remember who but another person was shaking their head no but couldn’t speak. Since it wasn’t clear I reached out for clarification last month and this is what I was told by Maria

“Ideally, we would prefer if all of the residents within a program tested on the same day at the same time, however we recognize that these physicians are on call and scheduling all residents to take the OITE at the same time would be a challenge. In that regard, we will work with you to obtain scheduling well in advance (3+ weeks prior to the exam) to establish which residents will test on any given day for the remote testing and proctoring administration option. As soon as we can, AAOS will push out additional information relating to remote testing details.”

We do not split ours up, but prefer to test on Friday. Sounds like that is not an option this year.

Alyssa, in-person taking the exam remains the same.

Joni, I would email the AAOS and tell them that you want to change and why.
It’s really important that they (AAOS) understand that it is just not feasible for majority of the programs to take the exam remotely, all on the same day.

Thanks Viveka for your update. She did not share this with me last week on our call. I did ask Maria to do another webinar since there are a lot of questions. I’ll keep everyone posted on this.

    Hi Kim,
Would the Examination team prefer we submit our requests/concerns individually or prefer you be the voice for us? If we sign up for the remote and they don’t change it to two days, can we opt out of that?

We prefer remote over two days due to call schedule and also since our Campus is going to online learning, the technology computer lab will most likely not be open so we don’t have anywhere for the residents to take the exam and be proctored in the traditional way.

hope you are all safe and doing well.

I mentioned this issue to our Program Director last week, and he has emailed Maria directly to let her know that our program currently doesn’t have an available space for in-person proctoring due to COVID distancing restrictions. He also indicated that it is unrealistic to offer the remote proctoring only on one day, since we have residents on call who would not be able to test at that time. He requested at least a 3 day window for residents to take the OITE remotely. The majority of the residents would take the test Saturday, and our weekend on-call residents would take the test Monday so they could get some sleep on Sunday. That is the schedule we’ve used for in-person proctoring in previous years.

We usually have 1 or 2 take it on Friday and Monday and the majority take it on Saturday. I would need 3 days.

    All,

After many discussions last week about the remote testing, I asked Maria if she could put together a simple FAQ’s with the updated changes and guidelines to follow for the remote testing. You will find this below. She will also be doing another webinar later this month. As soon as I know the date/time, I will be sure to let everyone know.

2020 OITE Remote Testing and Proctoring FAQs

What is remote testing and proctoring?

Remote testing and proctoring is a model of test administration employing state of the art technology to assist with the standardization of examination administrations. Remote testing eliminates the need for in-person, group testing and facilitates testing in an alternative environment such as a home or office.

The remote testing and proctoring model for the OITE is a web-based administration model and does not require individuals (residency director, coordinator, volunteer staff) to be logged into any portals during the exam administration. The examination is delivered in a computer-based format and the proctoring is accomplished by a contracted vendor via the web.

What OITE administration models are available for the November 13-16, 2020 OITE?

Residency programs have the option of choosing the traditional in-person, group administration model or the remote proctoring model.

Do residents need to test on the same day if the program chooses remote testing?

AAOS recognizes that the demands and professional obligations of the residents may not provide an opportunity for all residents to test on the same day. Knowing the resident’s schedules and availability in advance (at least 2-3 weeks) will facilitate scheduling of multiple (2-day) testing. We request that the programs limit scheduling to 2 days if necessary and encourage programs to test all residents on the same day and at the same time whenever possible.

Can the residency program have some residents test in-person and others test remotely?

All residents associated with the program will test in the model chosen by the residency program. Individual residents do not have the option to test remotely, if the programs opted for the in-person, group testing.

What resources are required for remote testing and proctoring?

Just as with the in-person, group testing, the resident will need a computer and continuous internet access. In addition, a web camera (either mounted external to the computer or equipped with the computer) and speakers are required for the remote testing option. Nearly all computers have these features, so there should be minimal concern about appropriate hardware.

Is continuous internet accessibility required to take the OITE remotely?

Continuous internet access and appropriate bandwidth are necessary to access and take the OITE in any setting (in-person/group or remotely).

Is there technical support for the remote setting administration option?

Technical support is available 24/7; however, not all matters are able to be resolved immediately. As in the in-person, group administration, AAOS will have a contingency or rescheduling plan in place in the event an examination cannot be completed due to an internet outage or power outage.

Is there any additional cost to the residency programs for the remote testing and proctoring option?

The residency programs will not incur any additional cost for the remote testing and proctoring option. The customary OITE registration fee ($110/resident) will be required for both the in-person, group testing or the remote testing option.
