    Hello All,
If we have an attending who works ONE time a month at a surgery center…do we have to have a PLA with that surgery center? It seems like I remember something about if it’s less than one month we do not need one. This is literally 1-2 days during their 8 week rotation. The FAQs for Ortho are down on ACGME’s website right now. Can anyone help? This application process is going to KILL me.

    Hi Kelli,
It doesn’t matter the amount of time that the resident works with the faculty member it depends upon how this surgical center is affiliated with your main hospital. For example, we have a surgical center that is off site that is part of the WellSpan System so therefore, we count it as a site but do not need a PLA. However, there are faculty that perform surgery at our main hospital, but they belong to another practice that is not part of WellSpan. Our residents work with those faculty members but only at our main hospital so therefore, we do not need a PLA since the residents do not work offsite with that faculty member. The work around for this is that one day a month, your residents do not work with that faculty member. In my experience, you will also have to onboard/credential your resident to that site, probably another mountain of paperwork.
Best wishes, it CAN happen! Feel free to email/call me for any kind of support!
